I am so thrilled to introduce Chandler Lowham from Fossil Ridge High School as our first Style ReDefined Senior!  Now, I am sure you are wondering what Style ReDefined means so, let me explain.  Back in December of 2014, we began to plan for the Spring 2015 release of Vol. 3 of Twelfth Year magazine.  This issue would feature the CSP 2016 Senior Models wearing apparel and accessories from local stores and boutiques that highlight the year's hottest trends.  With the main focus being fashion, we wanted to include another definition of beauty and style.  At Cindy Short Photography, we have always believed that the most beautiful portraits come from connecting with the subject.  It is this connection that allows the camera to capture the person's true spirit, their authentic beauty.

So, my studio manager, Tonya and I went to dinner and brainstormed.  The result is Style ReDefined.  It means that true style is not about fashion and the clothes you wear but the way in which you live your life.  True style is seen in how you interact with your peers and community.  True style is seen in the effect you have on those around you.  A Style ReDefined Senior realizes that he or she can make a difference and create change by encouraging and uplifting the people in his or her school and community.

To select the first Style ReDefined Senior, we collected nominations from the current senior class at local schools.  Hearing peers, family and a teacher/track coach talk about Chandler Lowham made the selection easy.  Chandler embodies all of the characteristics that we were seeking.  In fact, three words were repeatedly used to describe Chandler:  Caring, Compassionate and Selfless.  Chandler is known for supporting and encouraging her peers despite her own struggles.  Read more about her perseverance and extraordinary attitude in Twelfth Year magazine by clicking here.

So, of course we had to do a photo session!  After the professional make up application, Chandler and I headed out to Poudre River Stables in Fort Collins.  This down to earth girl just glows in the light of a barn on one of my favorite spots.  Next, we went to Horsetooth Reservoir for a more dramatic backdrop.  Chandler was a great sport when I asked her to hold a scarf that looks like an American flag.  These photos of Chandler will take your breath away, she is truly beautiful in every way.

Photographing this lovely 2015 Senior from Fossil Ridge High School was a dream!  Once you look into these big brown eyes, (my make up artist called them "puppy dog" eyes) you are hooked!  Jenna rocked her session from the studio to a nature area to the stables where we met up with her horse Slinky.  I love how Jenna's quiet confidence shows in her photos and yes, she is as sweet as she looks!  Jenna, you certainly captured my heart!

I fell in love with photographing the stunning Miss Taylor during our fashion model shoot last Spring for Twelfth Year Magazine.  Taylor's sweet, humble spirit rocked that session and she landed on the cover! (Check out this year's issue of Twelfth Year Magazine here.)  Taylor is an important part of Rocky Mountain High School's Varsity Volleyball team so we began her Senior Session in the studio to show off her love of the sport.  Then, we headed outside to a day filled with dark clouds and thunderstorms!  We scurried around town avoiding the rain - even ducking into a store in Old Town as thunder exploded above us!  Despite the increased humidity, Taylor stayed fresh and beautiful throughout the afternoon!  Taylor, you are one special young lady and I loved running from the rain with you!

The first time I photographed the lovely Sophie Lafayette was for this year's edition of Twelfth Year magazine.  Sophie, a senior from Fossil Ridge High School, was modeling the Elegant Maxi style as a member of the 2015 CSP Model Team.  I loved the natural confidence I saw in Sophie and it was even more evident through my lens.  Sophie is so comfortable just being Sophie!

This intelligent, world traveler spent the summer in the Netherlands visiting family and is hoping to return for college.  As a dual U.S and Dutch citizen Sophie just may get to realize her dream.  She returned home just in time for her Senior Portrait Session in August.  As part of making each session unique, I love incorporating something special into Senior Sessions such as their favorite sport, hobby or passion.   And although Sophie has participated in several sports such as tennis and lacrosse, her real passion is for reading.  So, Sophie's session began in the studio playing with books.  I love the expressions in her studio shots! You can see how much fun it is to hang out with this girl!

Next up was Old Town Fort Collins for some fun with a giant lollipop and cinnamon soda from Rocket Fizz. Nothing like sugar to get you energized for a photo shoot!  It apparently worked because Sophie was still laughing as we ended our session in the woods near the Cache La Poudre River.  It was late Summer and I was amazed at how calmly elegant Sophie looked in a stunning blue dress as we doused ourselves in mosquito repellant!  I am sure you will agree that Sophie is jaw-dropping GORGEOUS in her Senior Photos!

On a recent rainy evening, Ali Sherman and I met after work to talk about the trends in hair styling for Fall and Winter.  I was curious because Ali - who you probably know as the amazing woman who creates dazzling hair styles on the fly during the fashion photo shoot for Twelfth Year Magazine - has recently taken classes focused on the latest trends in hair styling and how to create fashion looks for the runway.  I was so excited by what I heard that I wanted to share it with all of you!

Ali works at Trios Aveda Salon & Spa in Fort Collins and is currently taking continuing education classes at the Aveda Institute in Denver.  Traveling to Denver to attend these classes is worth it to Ali who explains it is like getting her master's degree.  "I have learned my trade and now I am perfecting it," she says.

So what did Ali have to say about the trends for Fall and Winter season?  She immediately answered that the short "Pixie" cut is still popular but has a more androgynous look this year.  The cut has more weight to resemble a man's cut for a woman.  If this newer version of the Pixie cut is not your style, you can follow the trends of celebrities that are growing out their Pixie cuts.  "We saw a lot of celebrities getting Pixie cuts - Jennifer Lawerence was one - and now we are seeing the same celebrities growing out this cut.  Now they have a shaggy, longer version of the Pixie cut," Ali remarks.  "It is that 'I got all dolled up for the party and this is the day after look'.

Ali confirmed that this messy look takes a lot more work than you think.  But the good news is that most new styles are easily achieved by yourself!  Ali is quick to add, "It doesn't have to be perfect.  The trend is about finding the beauty in imperfections."

Aveda has established themselves as an industry leader in the world of fashion.  Just like New York Fashion Week reveals the trends twice a year, so does Aveda.  If you like photography, fashion, hair and make up, you will adore Aveda's newest look book.  Check it out here.

The Aveda Fall and Winter look book's theme is Romantic Grandeur and is inspired by the role Louise Brooks played in the 1929 German silent movie Pandora's Box.  Ali explained that many of these styles are like high fashion and may not appeal to many of us but are key within the fashion industry for complimenting the current trends.  Often, the hair style seen on the runway contrasts with the designer's look.  For example, a designer showing very structured clothes may want flowy hair on her models.

For a runway look, the hair style has to have a lot of stability to handle all the jostling that occurs with walking and changing clothes.  You have to account for possible malfunctions, Ali explains.  So, even the really flowy styles have structure underneath.  For example, using cornrows or braids that anchor the hair.  Then, the long hair lays over the braids and it appears as if the model just has long flowy locks.  But the foundation underneath holds it all together.  Oh, and lots and lots of hair spray!", Ali adds.

You can see what Ali is describing in her iPhone photos below:

So, what should we do if we want a change in our hair style right now?  Ali suggests adding 4 to 6 foils of copper, auburn or reddish brown color to add a touch of Fall to your hair.  "If you want to get sassy, add a block of red violet!" she says.

And if you are already planning for Prom, Ali has a few suggestions for Prom perfect hair!  If you plan to wear your hair in long, soft curls - get a few highlights to accentuate the curls.  If you want to add some fun color, the color for Spring is pink!  Pink tips will add some fun and fade out after several shampoos.  Or, if you are going for a funky updo - add a streak of color at the nap of your neck.  Then, when you wear your hair down, you will barely notice the color.  But it adds so much to that updo!
