I met this lovely family when their daughter, Lily, became one of my 2015 Senior Models.  I immediately fell in love with them all!  If you know the Taft family, you completely understand why.  You kind of just want to hang around them because they are so, well, just incredibly nice!

When we began planning their Family Session the scenic Cache La Poudre River seemed like the perfect location since Mr. Taft is an avid fisherman.   Once this was decided, we worked on clothing options for each member of the family that would coordinate with the greens and blues of the river and the plans to redecorate the family room where the photos would be displayed.  Mrs. Taft and her daughters did an amazing job of pulling it all together!

The day of their Family Portrait Session began with styling appointments at Trios Aveda Salon and Spa for Mom and her daughters.  It was pouring rain when they arrived at the studio for their professional make up application with Sara Dozier of MAC Cosmetics but these ladies stayed dry thanks to Dad and his umbrella.  What a trooper, serving as shuttle driver and protector of the newly styled hair!  Thankfully when we arrived at the river, the sun was shining!  It was even warm enough that standing in the river didn't make our feet freeze!

Next year, both girls will be away at college and I love knowing that they have beautiful canvases in their family room to remind them of this day spent together.

Coming into a family's home just days after the birth of a baby is quite an honor.  And I take this privilege very seriously.  This is a private time when two parents are still getting acquainted with their amazing, yet tiny, bundle of joy. These early, sweet days pass by way too quickly and capturing the wonder of a newborn usually happens within the first 10 days of life.  To photograph this event while making it simple for Mom and Dad, my newborn sessions always take place in the home.  Incorporating a laid back, lifestyle photography approach lets me tell the story of this new life while allowing ample time for feedings, diaper changes and making sure Mom has a drink and a snack.

This precious Loveland family especially touched my heart.  Their prayers to begin a family were answered with a beautiful baby boy!  Perfect in every way and sporting some very long fingers, baby Elliott was obviously the most extraordinary baby ever created in the eyes of his parents!  Standing in the presence of such love is powerful and I felt so lucky to photograph Elliott's first days!  As you will see in the photos below, Elliott received a very loving and enthusiastic welcome into this world.  Well, there was one family member that seemed a little less enthusiastic about Elliott's arrival - the Golden Retriever.  He looks a little puzzled in the photo below...

Last month, I attended a photography workshop by Tamara Lackey, an award winning photographer, author and speaker known for her authentic children's photography and her teaching on work/life balance.  I am a big believer in investing in education and already loved Tamara's workshops on CreativeLive (a great place to learn from home!).  I traveled to her Durham, North Carolina studio knowing that I would not only gain photography skills but also soak up her ability to balance a busy studio without sacrificing her marriage or her three children.  And indeed, I did. This was the perfect education investment for me this year.  Having spent half of last year in treatment for cancer, I needed more than just technical information.  I was looking for a well balanced approach to running a photography business.

When Tamara asked, "If this were taken away from you, how would it affect you?", I was struck with the realization that photography is high on my priority ist.  I realized that I cannot "not" do this.  As long as God allows me to live this life, I will be photographing children.  It is like I am unable to stop.  It is what I do.   It isn't just a job or a business, it is a part of me.

Needless to say, I loved every minute of Tamara's workshop.  It was a small group setting and Tamara openly shared everything she knows about photographing children and families, running a studio, and organizing your time.  No question was off limits and we asked a lot of questions!  I came away with a notebook full of information that will push me forward in my art without sacrificing time with my family.

During the workshop, we practiced photographing children in the beautifully green and warm environment of North Carolina - including the jaw-droppingly gorgeous campus of UNC-Chapel Hill. Here are some of my favorites!

While photographing this little one last Summer, I was privileged to witness the many and ever changing moods of the first birthday!  Paula Spencer, author of Parenting Guide to Your Toddler, described these mood swings in Parenting Magazine as "Jekyl and Hyde like".  Spencer goes on to describe the temperment of a toddler and has some good advice for handling the ups and downs, click here if you would like to read it!

This cutie-pie didn't have such scary mood swings!  Although she was bursting with personality and expression, there was nothing but happiness during our portrait session.  I loved the way she proudly walked the boardwalk at a Fort Collins nature area, eager to show off her newly acquired skills.  As she bounded toward me, I couldn't help but cheer for her as she performed this amazing feat!

As she played near the wild sunflowers, one happy, animated expression after another lit up her precious face!  The action is all at high speed when you are one and she quickly went from playful to sweet to silly and to happy in just minutes.  Following all of this activity is the inevitable slow down as little ones get sleepy - it is a lot of work to be so busy!  (This is why 1 Year Sessions are usually just one hour.)

I actually love the quieter photos as much as I love the happy, silly ones.  A sweet kiss for Mom and softer portraits also show the real side of being one.

Child Portrait Sessions are 50% off through March 2014 so you can also save a little scheduling your child's portrait this Winter!  To book your session call 970-682-4206 or email cindy@cindyshortphotography.com

When families plan for a Family Portrait Session, they are usually thinking of the family shot where everyone is looking at the camera.  Of course, we get those shots and everyone loves them...but the shots that really touch my heart are the Lifestyle shots.  What is a Lifestyle shot?  These are the images that show relationship, emotion or personality. Lifestyle images are more spontaneous and unique.

You can see the difference between traditional and lifestyle images in the Walker Family's Maternity session.  The first image is more traditional.  The rest are not.  Both traditional and lifestyle images are an awesome way to capture your family as you change and go through different stages.

Often, your favorites depend on how you will use the image.  What you prefer to hang on the wall could be different from what you want to include in an album.  You can see the Walker Family Album here.
