An incredible team has been busy preparing for the release of Twelfth Year Magazine Vol 4!  There has been fittings at local stores including BUCKLE, Blue Harvest Apparel, Coast To Coast Styles, Dora Grace Bridal, Francescas, GG's Boutique, Magnolia Moon, MkLAREN and Tula!  Then we had photo shoots with professional makeup by MAC Cosmetics artists Dotted With Hearts Artistry and Sara Dozier and hair styling by Bella Shea Salon.  A beautiful floral crown by Lace and Lilies was even miraculously created a day early.  The CSP 2017 Senior Model Team braved cold temperatures - some even wearing shorts!  In addition, interns from Colorado State University have spent long hours styling, assisting, organizing, interviewing and writing.  And, of course, there has been lots of editing and designing a magazine for publication.  Whew!  We are almost ready to share Twelfth Year Magazine Vol 4 with you!  Curious about Vol. 3?  Check it out here.

So, mark your calendars and plan to come out to the gorgeous clubhouse at Kechter Farm in southeast Fort Collins for a party!  We want to celebrate with you!

This red carpet event will also serve as a paper drive for CASA of Larimer County.  CASA is in need of paper towels, toilet paper, and tissues for Harmony House.  Harmony House provides a warm, home-like atmosphere for supervised visitation between children and their non-custodial family members.  Bring these items to The Reveal Party to contribute to the drive and help CASA continue to serve families in Northern Colorado!  You can learn more about CASA by clicking here.

A good friend of mine painted this artwork of the Harmony House in Fort Collins.  I love it so much, I had to share it here.

It is time to nominate a current high school senior for the Style ReDefined Award! This award goes to a current high school senior (class of 2016) in Northern Colorado who has positively affected their school and community by the "Style" that they live their life.  I am not referring to fashion style!  This person has a personal "style" of living and respecting others that improves the entire community.  You can read about last year's Style ReDefined Winner, Chandler Lowham, in Vol 3 of Twelfth Year magazine by clicking here.

What does the Style ReDefined winner receive?  This special person receives a 2 hour portrait session, a styling consultation to plan the session, professional make up application, a print package and a feature in Twelfth Year magazine.  This entire award is valued at $740!

The idea is to celebrate and share the story of a high school senior who makes a positive difference - perhaps someone who has met with difficult circumstances but still found a way to uplift and encourage others.  You may nominate someone for this honor by clicking clicking here.  Nominations close on February 24, 2016.

I look forward to hearing about the seniors you nominate and meeting the 2016 winner!

Summer is in full swing and it is hot!  And nothing keeps you cool and fresh like wearing white!  But those head-to-toe white looks featured on the runway can seem a little intimidating.  For Twelfth Year magazine, a print and digital magazine featuring the hottest style trends for 2015, we headed to Francesca's in the Promenade Shops at Centerra for advice.  We decided to add a dash of bold, bright color, keeping the sophistication of the all-white look with the addition of some fun pop!

"When dressing with Summer whites and bright, bold colors, pull together classic ladylike looks.  Think sweet, feminine and timeless.  Use accessories and jewelry in pop colors such as pink, cobalt and navy for a youthful feel," advised Amber Burton, Francesca's store manager.

As you can see below, CSP 2016 Senior Model Shawnea Pagat looks refreshing in a white skater dress from Francesca's.  The aqua and gold jewelry adds color and perfectly accents her breezy Summer look.  Instead of bright white shoes, Shawnea is wearing neutral bone pumps that are more versatile and keep the focus on her flirty white dress.

On a recent rainy evening, Ali Sherman and I met after work to talk about the trends in hair styling for Fall and Winter.  I was curious because Ali - who you probably know as the amazing woman who creates dazzling hair styles on the fly during the fashion photo shoot for Twelfth Year Magazine - has recently taken classes focused on the latest trends in hair styling and how to create fashion looks for the runway.  I was so excited by what I heard that I wanted to share it with all of you!

Ali works at Trios Aveda Salon & Spa in Fort Collins and is currently taking continuing education classes at the Aveda Institute in Denver.  Traveling to Denver to attend these classes is worth it to Ali who explains it is like getting her master's degree.  "I have learned my trade and now I am perfecting it," she says.

So what did Ali have to say about the trends for Fall and Winter season?  She immediately answered that the short "Pixie" cut is still popular but has a more androgynous look this year.  The cut has more weight to resemble a man's cut for a woman.  If this newer version of the Pixie cut is not your style, you can follow the trends of celebrities that are growing out their Pixie cuts.  "We saw a lot of celebrities getting Pixie cuts - Jennifer Lawerence was one - and now we are seeing the same celebrities growing out this cut.  Now they have a shaggy, longer version of the Pixie cut," Ali remarks.  "It is that 'I got all dolled up for the party and this is the day after look'.

Ali confirmed that this messy look takes a lot more work than you think.  But the good news is that most new styles are easily achieved by yourself!  Ali is quick to add, "It doesn't have to be perfect.  The trend is about finding the beauty in imperfections."

Aveda has established themselves as an industry leader in the world of fashion.  Just like New York Fashion Week reveals the trends twice a year, so does Aveda.  If you like photography, fashion, hair and make up, you will adore Aveda's newest look book.  Check it out here.

The Aveda Fall and Winter look book's theme is Romantic Grandeur and is inspired by the role Louise Brooks played in the 1929 German silent movie Pandora's Box.  Ali explained that many of these styles are like high fashion and may not appeal to many of us but are key within the fashion industry for complimenting the current trends.  Often, the hair style seen on the runway contrasts with the designer's look.  For example, a designer showing very structured clothes may want flowy hair on her models.

For a runway look, the hair style has to have a lot of stability to handle all the jostling that occurs with walking and changing clothes.  You have to account for possible malfunctions, Ali explains.  So, even the really flowy styles have structure underneath.  For example, using cornrows or braids that anchor the hair.  Then, the long hair lays over the braids and it appears as if the model just has long flowy locks.  But the foundation underneath holds it all together.  Oh, and lots and lots of hair spray!", Ali adds.

You can see what Ali is describing in her iPhone photos below:

So, what should we do if we want a change in our hair style right now?  Ali suggests adding 4 to 6 foils of copper, auburn or reddish brown color to add a touch of Fall to your hair.  "If you want to get sassy, add a block of red violet!" she says.

And if you are already planning for Prom, Ali has a few suggestions for Prom perfect hair!  If you plan to wear your hair in long, soft curls - get a few highlights to accentuate the curls.  If you want to add some fun color, the color for Spring is pink!  Pink tips will add some fun and fade out after several shampoos.  Or, if you are going for a funky updo - add a streak of color at the nap of your neck.  Then, when you wear your hair down, you will barely notice the color.  But it adds so much to that updo!

Want your hair to look amazing throughout your Portrait Session?  Then, ask us about the special discount to have your hair styled at Trios Aveda Salon & Spa on the day of your session!  Now booking for Winter and Spring 2015 Senior Sessions!  Call 970-682-4206 for session details or email cindy@cindyshortphotography.com

If you missed last week's Reveal Party, here is your chance to meet this year's Senior Models and view the newest edition of Twelfth Year magazine.  The 2015 Senior Models are part of our model program which begins during the junior year of high school.  These stunning young women model apparel and accessories from local stores and boutiques that showcase the most current fashion trends.  I admit that this is my favorite project all year.  Maybe it is because I feel like I am actually putting that journalism degree to use!  I have as much fun as the girls - going to fittings, watching the make up artists and hair stylist work their magic and marveling at how each girl magically fits her style trend.  Then, there is the absolute best part: seeing their natural beauty through the lens.  And, as crazy as it might sound, I also love the work of bringing the magazine to life.  If you are not familiar with the magazine, Twelfth Year is an online and print look book for high school seniors full of style tips and ideas for what to wear to a Senior Portrait session.  But it is also a handy guide for anyone who loves fashion!

Apparel and accessories:  Buckle, Cira Ltd., Dora Grace, Francescas, GG Boutique, Gap, MkLaren

Floral Crowns:  Lace and Lilies

Make Up: MAC Cosmetics

MUAs: Sara Haiar and Elizabeth Johns
